Canada updated their travel advisories for 15 nations on 3 and 4 April 2018, all of which have travelers being warned to exercise a high degree of caution.

Ethiopia - Borders with Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan, as well as the Somali and Gambella regions - Avoid all travel. Avoid all travel to the area within 10 km of the borders with Eritrea and South Sudan, as well as to the Somali and Gambella regions. Avoid all travel within 20 km of the border with Sudan. Danakil Desert and Erta Ale Volcano - Avoid all travel. Avoid all travel to the Danakil desert and areas around the Erta Ale Volcano in the Afar region. Border with Kenya - Avoid non-essential travel. Avoid non-essential travel to areas within 10 km of the border with Kenya due to inter-tribal clashes and banditry. - areas within 150 km of the Kenya–Somalia border, including all of Garissa and Lamu counties, due to a risk of kidnapping and attacks
- areas within 50 km of the coast, from north of the city of Malindi to the Kenya–Somalia border, due to a risk of kidnapping and attacks
- areas within 100 km of the borders with South Sudan and Ethiopia, due to armed banditry and cross-border violence
