Vigorous eruption of lava continues from the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens within the Lower East Rift Zone. Authorities are warning residents to evacuate, now. Those who opt not to do so are placing themselves at unnecessary risk. Mayor Harry Kim, minces no words as he advises: “emergency crews may not be able to respond.”

Separately, the County of Hawaii Civil Defense provided a map of the “mandatory evacuation order”
Residents along Papaya Farms Rd & Noni Farms Rd should evacuate now. Residents of Vacationland & Kapoho Beach Lots should evacuate by 6/1 6PM or risk isolation. Mandatory evacuation order in effect for areas east of Pomaikai St in Leilani Estates. Evacuate by 6/1 12PM. pic.twitter.com/v5PTpURlco

The USGS, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory updated their lava flow map at 1400 HST, 31 May 2018. As can be seen in the inset map, the activity associated with this volcanic event is affecting only a small portion of the Big Island of Hawaii, and the other islands are neither affected, nor at risk according to those on the ground in Hawaii.
Once again, we remind, tourists to the Big Island should avoid traveling to the are detailed in the USGS map.
U.S. - Oregon - Salem water advisory
The City of Salem, Oregon issued a drinking water advisory on 29 May, which remains in effect, with no estimated date of removal provided by city officials. The full Drinking Water Advisory. Unlike other events which contaminate water, and which boiling water makes the water potable, city officials warn such is not the case in this instance. Their advice is:

Italy - Demonstrations 01 & 02 June
The US Department of State advises that political demonstrations will occur in Rome (possibly other cities). Travelers, unfamiliar with the city should take the time to inquire of their local hosts as to the location of the demonstrations and steer clear.

Nicaragua - Widespread & unpredictable violence
As we have reported in many of our Securely Travel Briefs the US Department of State has ordered their mission personnel to not travel about the city of Managua unnecessarily and to remain at their residences. Media reports that Nicaraguan authorities are using lethal force to quell demonstrations, as detailed in the 30 May 2018 brief. The government of Australia has also issued an alert to their citizens and urging them to “reconsider travel to Nicaragua.”
