Securely Travel Brief – 07 June 2018

Today’s brief is culled from global travel warnings and alerts.

U.S. - Hawaii - Kilauea - Kilauea volcano slowing down?

The Kilauea volcano has passed through the 30-day mark with large scale lava flows as it continued its march to the sea. The residents of the Big Island are no doubt hoping that Kilauea is slowing down, as they have experienced over 9,000 earthquakes over the last 45 days. Then, Kilauea seemingly has decided to take a breath. The flow of lava slowed, confined at this time to Fissure 8, according to the USGS. Our travel advice to the islands of Hawaii remains the same - “4 important tips to know before you travel to Hawaii.”

USGS provides the following description of Kilauea’s activity, and Fissure 8

Lava fountaining at Fissure 8 continues, with fountain tops reaching heights of 130-210 feet, This activity is feeding a lava channel flowing east to the Kapoho Bay area. Lava is continuing to enter the ocean in the area of the Vacationland subdivision. A late afternoon overflight showed that the ocean entry is creating a vigorous steam plume that is being blown inland to the southwest. The delta that formed at Kapoho Bay extended slightly throughout the day, and a lateral lobe of the flow is pushing slowly north through what remains of the Kapaho Beach Lots subdivision.
The northern lobe of the Fissure 8 flow appears to have stalled with only traces of smoke at the flow front, although there is some incandescence in the finger of that lobe that advanced along a low graben a few nights ago. No other fissures are active.

Guatemala - Devastation follows Volcano Fuego’s second eruption

Reports coming in from Guatemala shows death tolls rising, and number of missing eclipsing 2,000. Aid is pouring in from around the world from both official (governments) and private non-governmental organizations (NGO). Evacuation of burn victims to the United States has commenced. According to the Weather Channel Canada, over 1.7 million people have been affected by the eruption of Volcano Fuego.

Jordan - Demonstrations in Amman

Demonstrations in protest to government’s austerity measures has caused widespread protests within Jordan’s capitol, Amman. Alghad, English language news, reports that Jordan will be requesting assistance from the International Monetary Fund to help alleviate the current crisis. The UK’s FCO advises travelers to be especially alert for spontaneous demonstrations this Friday, 08 June, following midday prayers.

Cameroon: Violence and Kidnappings

Travelers are urged to avoid travel to the Northwest and Southwest areas of Cameroon due to “localised violence and kidnappings” in a travel warning issued by Smartraveller (Australia government travel site).
