Securely Travel Brief – 08 June 2018

Today’s brief is culled from global travel warnings and alerts.

U.S. - Hawaii - Hazardous plumes of “laze”

The USGS reports that continued flow of lava into the Pacific Ocean creates dangerous clouds of “Laze” which is hazardous to one’s health. While the lava flow from the Kilauea Volcano continues, affected areas remain confined to the small quadrant of the Big Island within the volcano’s East Rift Zone, see map below. Local television created an “impact” piece which provides a snap-shot into how the volcano’s eruption has affected local residents.

Italy - Air Traffic disrupted

A planned strike by Air Traffic Controllers is affecting flights into and out of Italian air space. Travelers are urged to double-check with their airline to determine if their flight(s) are delayed or canceled. In addition, the nationwide industrial action may affect one’s ability to transit intra-Italy during the protest period.

Israel - Kite bombs from Gaza & West Bank

Over the past few weeks an ever increasing number of “kite bombs” have been launched from Gaza into Israel, setting ablaze fields and structures. i24 news reports, yesterday, that for the first time kite bombs were launched from the West Bank into vastly more densely populated areas of Israel.

Kite Bomb: A kite bomb is a kite, which has a Molotov cocktail, grenade or other destructive device attached to its tail

China - Beijing - US diplomats under acoustic attack?

The Embassy of the United States in Beijing, China reiterated their warning about the “acoustic attacks” taking place which have resulted in the medical evacuation of US mission personnel. The warning from the Embassy specifically directs:
