Securely Travel Brief – 13 September 2019
Today’s travel brief is culled from global travel warnings and alerts.
1- Hong Kong - Airport Protests
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a warning concerning the protests scheduled for the weekend of 14-15 September. It is anticipated that public transport and road traffic to and from Hong Kong’s airport will be disrupted.
Be sure to check with your airline prior to traveling to the airport to ensure your flight is departing and has not been delayed/cancelled due to protesters. If traveling to the airport, allow additional time for your transit.
2- United Kingdom - Heathrow Airport Drone Protests
A protest group, “Heathrow Pause” which advocates for a response to “the climate and ecological emergency” have again brought technology to the forefront in their efforts to disrupt air traffic at London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). Law enforcement have arrested members of the group, aka “third runway activists” as they prepared their drone protests.
Nonetheless, in the early morning hours of 13 September the group began using “signal jamming to frustrate early flights.” Heathrow Airport noted that they would be making every effort to stay open on 13 September.
Travelers should factor in the possibility of flight delays at Heathrow, today and over the next few days.
3- Nepal - Dengue Fever Outbreak
Thousands have fallen ill due to dengue fever according to the UK’s Telegraph. Though 6 have perished and greater than 8,000 have been identified as having fallen ill with dengue, exact numbers in this mountainous nation remain allusive.
The World Health Organization identified dengue as one of the top 10 threats to the world’s health, says the Telegraph. Symptoms of dengue include “debilitating flu-like symptoms including a high fever, headaches and joint pain.”
Travelers to Nepal should take every precaution to avoid areas where mosquitoes are present.
