1 - United States - Texas - Beaumont flooding
Over 1000 rescued due to flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Imelda, which dropped 30+ inches of rain in a matter of hours. The National Weather Service predicts flooding to continue into 21 September.
2 - United States - Massachusetts - Eastern Equine Encephalitis
Multiple cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis have been discovered in Massachusetts. The mosquito-borne infection, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, while rare is a serious and potentially fatal disease for people of all ages. Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. “We urge the public to use bug spray, wear long sleeves and pants and socks to reduce exposed skin, and stay indoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.”
3 - Virgin Islands - Hurricane Jerry
The National Hurricane Center and the UK’s FCO have both issued warnings for the Virgin Islands and Category 1 hurricane Jerry which is expected to pass north of the islands on Friday 20 September and Saturday 21 September.
4 - Global - Youth Climate Strike
The global call for a protest by the youth of the world to highlight the threat to the earth’s climate caused by global warming kicked off the morning of 20 September. The protests are expected to occur in cites both large and small. Some protests will follow designated routes, others may be more fluid. Travelers would be well served to inquire of their hosts and/or hotel personnel as to where the protests in their location may be occurring.
