15 organized crime groups operate in Cancun

During a press conference, in Cancun, to discuss crime in Quintana Roo, Minister of Public Security for the state of Quintana Roo, Alberto Capella Ibarra noted that 15 organized crime groups operate in Quintana Roo, of which seven are international criminal groups. The criminal organizations conduct money laundering, drug trafficking and other high-impact crimes.

Capella said that he will release details about these 15 groups in the coming days.



Kidnapping and murder of Archi Yama

With respect to the kidnap and murder of José Luis Archi Yama by a northern Mexico cartel, he opined that Archi Yama was taken by individuals known to him. Attributed the crime to local cartels, Los Bonfiles or Cartel de Cancun. Capella explained that Archi Yama was forced to say things on the video prior to his death.


Archi Yama connection with corrupt former Governor

Capella went on to connect Archi Yama to the former Governor Roberto Borge Angulo. Borge, was arrested for corruption (which included turning a blind eye to the activities of organized crime) and subsequently sentenced to two-years in prison.

Archi Yama’s connection to Borge was multi-faceted. He was for a time the driver of Borge. In addition, Archi Yama engaged in real estate proxy ownership for Borge. Capella explained, “The investigations that this institution is carrying out together with the State Attorney General’s Office have shown that our partner (Archi Yama) allegedly had six properties whose real ownership was that of the former governor of the state.
