Shortly after we updated our advice specific to Acapulco, Mexico so as to answer the query: “Is Acapulco safe?” our answer was reinforced with an explanation point, when a robbery occurred in the lobby of the Hotel Diana Acapulco. From our vantage point, the answer to the question, “Is Alcapulco safe?” should be “Acapulco is dangerous.”

In the morning hours of 09 November 2019, a group of 45 tourists from the State of Mexico were robbed at gunpoint as they checked into the hotel. The tourists lost their belongings and at least 32,000 Mexican pesos.

The robbery was carried out by three armed men who were apparently assisted by an insider. The tourists expressed their suspicion that the manager of the Hotel Acapulco Diana may have been working in concert with the three men who robbed the tourists.

The director of the Tourist Assistance and Protection Center of Acapulco (CAPTA), Jondalar Castillo, advised that the “the visitors were treated and then were guided and accompanied so that they could report the incident to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Tourist Assistance.

The budget hotel is located about a block from the main beach road, Costera Avenue, in the Magallanes subdivision of Acapulco, Guerrero.

Travelers to Acapulco should use the utmost caution, leave valuables at home and only bring with them that which they are prepared to lose should they fall victim to similar circumstances as these 45 tourists.
