Air Niugini Flight PX073 crashes in lagoon, all passengers survive

One doesn’t know whether to credit or blame the pilot of the Air Niugini plane which crashed in a lagoon just short of the runway at Chuuk International Airport in Micronesia. Local authorities note the Boeing 737-800 had 47 on board (35 passengers, 12 crew) and all 47 survived, though seven required hospitalization, including one passenger described as in critical, but stable condition.

While the boat settled in water, half-submerged, the crash could have ended much differently had it not been for the small flotilla of boats which immediately made their way to the aircraft. This flotilla included, according to the AP, U.S. Navy sailors, who assisted in the rescue of passengers.

The Air Niugini flight PX 073, according to the BBC, “was flying from the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, stopping at Micronesia’s Weno island”

This crash, no doubt brings back memories of the crash of the U.S. Airways jet on the Hudson River. While also emphasizing why the flight safety briefings are more than just perfunctory, they save lives.
