Over the weekend the current cartel turf battle within the Mexican state of Quintana Roo escalated in Cancun, with the assassination of a state police officer. As we have mentioned many times, travel to Mexico is generally safe. The cartel turf battle in Cancun rarely spills out into the tourist zone of Cancun or Playa de Carmen. That said, every traveler should be asking the question, “Is it safe to travel to Cancun?” and conducting appropriate due diligence prior to travel.
Cartel execution of police officer in Cancun

The Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) abducted then executed José Antonio Archi Yama a shift supervisor in the Playa De Carmen State Police precinct. His body was found near the intersection of La Luna Extension and Huayacán Avenue. The location is not in the vicinity of normal tourist hotels or entertainment.

The CJNG aired a video of Archi Yama prior to his execution where he noted that he had arrested members of the CJNG. The cartel’s intent is to intimidate law enforcement in Quintana Roo. They then proceeded to kill him.
