What should have been a routine flight from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Tampa International Airport on Friday, 11 November, on board Frontier Airlines flight FFT1761 turned out to be anything but routine. A male passenger had threatened to stab fellow passengers and crew members on board the Frontier flight. The flight was diverted to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where the passenger was taken into custody by the FBI, with the assistance of the Atlanta Police Department and his hand carry searched. During that search, a second box cutter was found.

TSA screening
The fact that not one, but two box cutters passed through TSA screening (presumably at CVG) is troublesome. TSA, said in a statement:
“TSA takes its role in transportation security very seriously. The situation with the Frontier flight is under investigation with the US Attorney’s Office, as they are the lead federal agency in this matter. TSA has started an internal review of the incident by viewing CCTV, airport security checkpoint processes/operations and will continue to provide updates as they are available. TSA can confirm that blades are prohibited in the cabin, but allowed in checked luggage,”
No one thinks TSA screenings will capture 100% of all prohibitive items, and this is why we hear the continuous announcements within airports about never leaving your bags unattended and if you see something say something.
TSA notes attempts to bring prohibitive items in hand-carry is on the increase, especially firearms.
