Majestic Princess docks in Sydney with 800 COVID cases on board

The Majestic Princess docked in Sydney, Australia with approximately 800 cases of COVID on board. Marguerite Fitzgerald, the president of the cruise operator Carnival Australia, told the BBC, that a large number of cases had been detected half-way through the voyage. The ship carries 3,560 passengers and 1,346 crew member, which calculates out to more than 16% of those on board had COVID when it docked today (12 November) in Sydney.

This is the second Princess ship this month which has had to deal with an outbreak of COVID, the first being the Coral Princess which was designated a Tier 3 COVID threat by Australia in early November, when the ship had reported 290 cases of COVID on board. Today, the Majestic Princess has also earned this designation.

Fitzgerald attempted to put a mitigating spin on the fact that just under 20% of all passengers and crew had COVID with her observation that, “All cases were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.” She continued, how Princess staff will be assisting those with COVID “with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period”

The Majestic Princess, like it sister ship the Coral Princess prior, has been given a Tier 3 designation.

The ship departed Sydney, according to Cruisemapper and his heading toward Melbourne and is scheduled to return to Sydney on 20 November.

Majestic Princess current location is at East Australia (coordinates -35.33189 S / 151.08901 E) cruising at speed of 19.7 kn (36 kph/ 23 mph) en route to Melbourne.

12 Nov 16:00    Departing from Sydney, NSW Australia
14 Nov 07:00 - 17:00    Melbourne, Victoria Australia
16 Nov 07:00 - 22:00    Hobart, Tasmania Australia
17 Nov 08:00 - 19:00    Port Arthur, Tasmania Australia
19 Nov 07:00 - 16:00    Eden, NSW Australia
20 Nov    Arriving in Sydney, NSW Australia

Our advice remains the same, if you are getting on a cruise ship this holiday season, factor in the possibility (some may say probability) of becoming infected with COVID. Please also make sure you have the right insurance policy in the event you find yourself in forced isolation due to COVID in a far-away land.

We have to wonder, how many cases of COVID will be on board the ship at that time.
