MEXICO - CDC advises Do Not Travel at this time

As hundreds of thousands plan on their annual trip to visit relatives and simply relax to Mexico, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises U.S. travelers to avoid Mexico at this time due to the increased chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.

This writer, is one of those who has spent many a Christmas in Mexico, but not this year. The widespread presence of COVID both in the United States and Mexico is sufficient deterrent.

The Arizona Republic highlights the draw and importance of wanting to spend “Nochebuena” with family in Mexico. This year, that celebration might best be celebrated via Zoom or equivalent and keep all safe to celebrate many more years.

Dr. Cecila Rosales, the co-chair for the Arizona-Mexico Commission’s binational Health Services Committee told the Arizona Republic the potential for the virus to spread at these family gatherings also could have consequences for the communities back home.

The Mexican government, isn’t attempting to deter travel, as their Paisano Program, published 30 November 2020, reminds that Mexican nationals are guaranteed entry, transit and exit. Their guide is available for download here.


LEVEL 4: Very High Level of COVID-19 in Mexico

The CDC advises, that if you must travel to Mexico at this time to:

  • Get tested before, during and after (3-5 days) travel
  • Wear a mask and stay at least six feet from people not traveling with you. Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer and monitor yourself for symptoms
  • Unable to get tested? Stay home for 10 days.

Remember, if you get sick with COVID during travel while abroad, you may not be able to return to the United States until after completing isolation requirements.
