According to NBC News, a passenger exited the rear door of Southwest Airlines Flight WN4236 today (04 December) as it was taxiing to a gate at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The flight from Colorado Springs arrived at the Phoenix Airport at approximately 8:00AM, a few minutes early.

When the incident happened, the pilot stopped the aircraft, notified Air Traffic Control, the airline said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

“Local authorities responded to the situation and shortly after the flight continued to its designated gate with all remaining customers and crew,” the statement read.

Local KNXV television reported, the passenger jumped, landed and made his way to the Phoenix Fire Station 19 located onsite at the airport. Once at the firehouse, he made his way into the dormitory room and locked himself inside. After a few minutes firefighters were able to unlock the door and administered medical care to the individual for lower extremity injuries. He was then transported to local hospital for treatment.

Why the individual felt compelled to open the rear door and jump has not been determined.
