How popular is Venice, Italy? It is so popular that the number of tourists is overwhelming the city’s ability to accomodate the onslaught, and they now are limiting access to the city center.
We shared, in 2018, how Venice city center was overcrowded with our piece “Sorry we’re full: Venice closed to tourists” and that the land and cruise tourist industries were pushing thousands of daily visitors into the city center and causing crisis. While one expects to see the Roman gates of historical lore, one wasn’t expecting to see turnstiles. Yet during major festivals, the turnstiles were in effect.

Come 01 May 2019, tourists to Venice will be charged between €3 and €10 (Euros) to gain access to the city center. While the Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has expressed how there is no intent to make money with the fee, rather the goal is to regulate the number of visitors to ensure all can enjoy the treasures of this elegant canal city.

We recommend that visitors ensure their ability to garner a “ticket” via the reservation system well ahead of their arrival.
Enjoy Venice!
