Traveling to Canberra (ACT), Australia any time soon? If you do and are out and about on a Friday or Saturday night, know this, the Canberra Night Crew is out there with you. ABC news (Australia) tells us that the Canberra Night Crew is a joint effort between the Canberrathe ACT Government and St John Ambulance. The purpose is to offer a safe place for people to get first aid, sober up, get their phone charged or just hang out.
Volunteers also patrol Civic (public transport hub in downtown Canberra) between 10:00pm and 4:00am handing out free water, lollipops, thongs for people who have lost their shoes and vomit bags.
You’ll recognize their personnel by their distinctive jackets and tent.
According to ABC News reports St. John’s ambulance has invested A$250,000 into the pilot program and is looking at ways to continue it. Volunteers, come from all walks of life, with an “impressive response from the universities, with nursing students and paramedicine and social work, that a lot of young people really want to get out there” giving up their Friday and Saturday nights.
One volunteer, Lilly-Rae Jones, told ABC News, “we hear that we’re angels - or I’ve been told that I’m someone’s source of life before.” She continued, “There’s always one story, one person that you’ve helped that you’ll take home and really reflect on it and know you’ve done something good that night.
Here’s the ACT government video describing the Canberra Night Crew.
